SWEDISH TRANSLATIONS ARE EXPENSIVE

English-Swedish. This language pair is one of the most expensive translations you will encounter. There are relatively few native Swedes that are professional language translators. Most Swedish people are quite good at English but they rarely choose the path of becoming translators. This together with Sweden's high economic level and intensive market activity creates a demand that is higher than the supply of expert level translators.

Average rates from a Sweden based language translation company are usually between 1-3 SEK per word. The world market price states approximately $0.14 dollars per word (that is approximately 0.9 SEK/word) for the language pair ENGLISH-SWEDISH. That price includes freelancers working from Asia and Central America with very low operational costs.

Do you have questions regarding VAT management when it comes to buying services from another EU country? (i.e. translation services). Normally when you buy from a business in another EU country you should not see any VAT specified on the invoice. This is due to the recharge rules stating that the buyer should account for the VAT, the so called reverse charge rule. This is also true when it comes to invoicing a company in another EU country, then you should not state VAT on the invoice. Exceptions exists, please seek advice from your local Tax Authority before invoicing. There is a Swedish site called momsens.se that specialize in supplying tax and VAT info for small business owners if you require help with VAT-reporting.

If you are a buyer from the rest of the world you will not be charged any EU or domestic VAT on the translation invoice either, you may, or may not, need to calculate a domestic VAT on your purchase, or pay import VAT to your local Tax authority. Different rules applies in different countries. Make sure you contact your government agency for VAT questions if you are unsure how to handle VAT issues internationally.

You will be invoiced from my Swedish company. IF you are a private person ordering translation services from me, then I must add Swedish domestic VAT on the invoice which will make the invoice 25% more expensive for you as a customer. This is due to the VAT regulations in Sweden and EU. If you have a company and a valid VAT number I will not apply VAT on the invoice. If you have further questions regaring taxes on invoice please don't hesitate to contact me, I have a Master degree in Accounting and Finance as well, and I also run the Accounting and Finance Blog in English here, hence I should be able to explain most of your questions on this topic for you.
